Groton Elementary School is kicking off the Positivity Project this school year! Each week teachers and staff, including our entire kitchen and daytime custodial staff, will be decked out in their blue P2 shirts to signify kicking off a new word of the week. Students across the building will be diving into 24 different character strengths, such as kindness, honesty, integrity, other people mindset, and teamwork, learning what those strengths mean and how to be their best possible selves for their own personal development as well as for their peers. Students will have the opportunity to earn character cash when they demonstrate these traits, spending it at the school store on various items. We are excited to have our preschoolers all the way up through our 5th graders speaking the same positive language!

Sportsmanship Update As the fall sports season kicks off for the 2023-2024 school year, the Groton CSD wants to make all spectators aware of a new regulation put in place by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) in an effort to make public school sporting events a safe, family-friendly environment for all. Commencing with the fall sports season, the state has instituted updated rules for spectators. Any spectator displaying unsportsmanlike conduct towards another fan, an official, a coach, or a student athlete will be given a warning by the school administrator on-site (unless the act is egregious, at which point they will be removed from the premises immediately). Continued unsportsmanlike conduct will result in removal from the contest AND a requirement the spectator complete a NYS-approved spectator conduct training before being allowed to return to public high school sporting events at any high school in New York. As has been the case in previous years, we ask all spectators to remember that these events are high school events. As such, “we should recognize the purpose of athletics is to promote physical, mental, social and emotional well-being of individual players and their fans,” and that the games are “between high school students, not professionals.” We encourage everyone in attendance to display proper ideals of sportsmanship, ethical conduct and fair play.

Changes on The Way in Food Service! A new school year brings with it new initiatives. One of those is in food services. Most notably, we are excited to inform you of the following changes you can expect with your child’s meal preparation this year: > There will be a full salad bar option in both buildings starting in September. > We will be reintroducing Chef’s Corner this fall, allowing students to sample new food items on a monthly basis. > We are building our capacity to serve food entrees made from scratch rather than pre-packaged, processed foods. This will expose our students to home cooked food, while providing more nutritious options for the menu. > We are adding a fruit-infused water station at each building. Of course, all students will continue to be able to eat for free, thanks to the CEP grant funding. We look forward to seeing everyone in the food service lines this fall! HUGE THANK YOU to Kelly Neville and the Food Services Staff. We appreciate the hard work and dedication you all put in for our students.
