Flute Workshop A Harmonious Success

Flute Workshop A Harmonious Success

Earlier this month, Groton High School flutists participated in a special workshop led by professional musician Elizabeth Shuhan. Besides performing independently, Elizabeth Shuhan is the principal flutist at the Fort Smith Symphony, a visiting lecturer at Ithaca College and Cornell University, and a Suzuki flute specialist and instructor for OPUS Ithaca School of Music. Shuhan hosted multiple workshops for sixth through twelfth grade students, which included one-on-one instruction for those students who are preparing for the NYSSMA competition. “(All of the students) learned so much in a short amount of time,” Groton Music Teacher Skyler Roswell said. “So much opened up in their sound and their playing, they found a new love for their solo and a different interpretation of their solo.”

Each workshop focused on developing the skills to improve individual technique, which students could hear in their sound. Roswell noticed that the visit seemed to rejuvenate her students and spark a passion for developing their potential. “She is such a specialist, which helps bring talent to the next level,” Roswell said. She added that the visit was such as success, she looks forward to inviting more guest musicians to present to her students in the future.
